AKC CGC Evaluator

Do you want to CGC title your dog?

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Titles Explained
AKC CGC Evaluator:

Darlene Zapp
The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is designed to recognize dogs that demonstrate good manners, reliable obedience, and appropriate behavior in everyday situations. These titles show that a dog is a responsible companion and a credit to the breed.

🏅 Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
The CGC is the foundation title in the program and focuses on basic manners and obedience.
Dogs are tested on:
• Accepting a friendly stranger
• Sitting politely for petting
• Proper grooming and handling
• Walking on a loose leash
• Walking through a crowd
• Sit, down, and stay on command
• Coming when called
• Reaction to distractions
• Supervised separation
Who this title is for:
Puppies and adult dogs learning basic obedience and good household manners.
Why it matters:
CGC shows your dog is well-mannered, under control, and safe in public settings. Many landlords, insurance companies, and training programs recognize this title.
🏅 CGC Advanced (CGCA)
The CGCA builds on CGC skills and tests the dog in more challenging, real-world environments.
Dogs are evaluated on:
• Reliable obedience in public places
• Controlled walking around distractions
• Polite behavior around other dogs and people
• Confidence in unfamiliar environments
Who this title is for:
Dogs that already hold the CGC title and are ready for higher-level manners in public.
Why it matters:
CGCA demonstrates advanced training and stability, showing your dog can behave appropriately beyond basic settings.
🏅 CGC Urban (CGCU)
The CGCU is the highest CGC-level title and focuses on real-life urban skills.
Dogs must demonstrate:
• Calm behavior in busy public areas
• Walking on sidewalks and near traffic
• Manners around elevators, stairs, and buildings
• Proper behavior in stores or public facilities
Who this title is for:
Dogs that frequently go into public spaces, cities, or busy environments.
Why it matters:
CGCU proves your dog can safely and confidently handle real-world urban situations.

Prepping for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Obedience Title
This program is designed to properly prepare dogs and handlers for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) obedience title through structured, focused training. The goal is to build reliable manners, confidence, and control in real-life situations while strengthening the bond between dog and handler.
Program Structure
• Duration: 5 weeks total
• Training: 4 weeks
• Session Length: 30 minutes per session
• Evaluation: Week 5 – Official CGC Test

Each week focuses on the core skills required to successfully pass the CGC test, while reinforcing positive behavior and consistency.
Training will cover:
• Polite greetings with people (no jumping)
• Accepting a friendly stranger
• Sitting politely for petting
• Loose-leash walking
• Walking through a crowd
• Sit, down, and stay on command
• Recall (coming when called)
• Proper reactions to distractions

•
Handling and grooming acceptance
Dogs are trained to remain calm, confident, and well-mannered in everyday situations, not just in a training environment.

This test assesses whether the dog demonstrates the behavior, obedience, and temperament expected of a well-mannered companion.
Upon successful completion, dogs are eligible to earn their AKC CGC title.

Important Clarification – CGC Prep Testing
CGC Prep Testing is not an obedience class.
This program is designed only to prepare you and your dog for the CGC evaluation test.
During prep testing, handlers and dogs will review the specific CGC test items, expectations, and handling skills required to successfully pass the evaluation. While guidance and coaching are provided, this is not a step-by-step obedience training course and does not replace formal obedience classes.
This prep is ideal for dogs that already have basic manners and obedience skills and need focused preparation for the CGC test environment.

Puppy S.T.A.R

AKC STAR Puppy® Program — Before CGC
The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® program is the foundation step before a dog works toward the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title. It is designed for puppies under 1 year of age and focuses on early training, socialization, and responsible ownership.
What does S.T.A.R. stand for?
• S – Socialization
• T – Training
• A – Activity
• R – Responsible dog ownership
Purpose of the STAR Puppy Program
The STAR Puppy program helps puppies:

• Build confidence in new environments
• Learn basic manners and focus
• Develop positive social skills with people and dogs
• Create a strong bond between puppy and owner
It prepares both the puppy and handler for success before advancing to the CGC program.
What puppies learn
Puppies are introduced to:

• Name recognition and attention
• Sit, down, and basic leash skills
• Walking politely on leash
• Coming when called
• Handling and gentle grooming
• Calm behavior around people and other dogs
• Exposure to different sights, sounds, and environments
Owner responsibilities taught
Handlers learn:
• Proper training techniques using positive reinforcement
• Puppy management and safety
• Socialization importance during critical development stages
• How to build consistency at home
• Understanding puppy behavior and body language
STAR Puppy Test (Evaluation)
At the end of the program, puppies are evaluated on:
• Basic obedience skills
• Willingness to engage and focus
• Social behavior
• Owner’s understanding of responsible dog ownership
This is not a competition—it’s a confidence-building evaluation.
How STAR Puppy leads to CGC
• STAR Puppy = Foundation & puppy manners
• CGC = Advanced manners & real-world reliability
Puppies that complete STAR Puppy are better prepared for:
• Longer focus
• More distractions
• Higher expectations required for the CGC test
Important to know
• STAR Puppy is not required to earn a CGC, but it is highly recommended
• Puppies must be under 12 months
• Dogs do not need to be AKC registered to participate (mixed breeds are welcome)
• Upon passing, puppies receive an AKC STAR Puppy certificate and medal
In short
AKC STAR Puppy builds the foundation.
CGC builds the reliability.
Starting with STAR Puppy sets puppies up for long-term success in CGC, obedience, therapy work, and everyday life. 🐾

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® — Class Requirement Before Evaluation
Before a puppy can be evaluated for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy® title, the puppy must attend a puppy training class. This is an AKC requirement, not just an evaluation-only test.
Why a puppy class is required
The class ensures that:

• The puppy has received basic training and structured socialization
• The puppy has been exposed to new environments, people, and other dogs
• The handler understands positive training methods
• Both puppy and owner are properly prepared for the STAR Puppy evaluation
The STAR Puppy program is about education and foundation, not just passing a test.
Evaluation eligibility

• Puppies must complete a puppy class before evaluation
• Puppies must be under 12 months of age
• The evaluation confirms skills learned during class
• This is not a competition, but a readiness assessment
Evaluation fees
• Individual evaluation: $75.00
• Group evaluation: $55.00 per puppy

Key takeaway
No class = no STAR Puppy evaluation.
The puppy class builds the foundation needed for success, confidence, and proper manners before moving on to advanced training such as the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. 🐶🐾
